The Great Winter Soup Cook-Off is scheduled on Saturday, February 7, 2015 from 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. at the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center as a fundraiser to support educational programs. The awards ceremony will begin at 2:30 p.m. Individuals, teams, and professionals are encouraged to participate by preparing a favorite soup(s) and entering the competition. Awards will be given in two categories, professional and amateur. Awards will be given for 1st-3rd place in each category as well as special prizes such as People’s Choice and Rooted in Appalachia, Showmanship and special soup awards such as “Best Chicken Soup.” A new souper youth category for ages 9-15 is being added this year. This group will have their own judges. The youth category encourages individuals, youth groups, clubs and scout troops to enter a fun-filled competition. Youth registration fee is $5.00.
The professional category is for restaurants and culinary related businesses. Registration is $15.00 plus a door prize valued at $25.00 or more. A total of two soups are allowed per registration. The winner in this category will receive a monetary gift card and traveling trophy to be displayed at their business throughout the year. 2nd-3rd places will be awarded special prizes.
The amateur category is for individuals and teams. Businesses, clubs and organizations are included in this category. Registration is $10.00. One soup is allowed per registration. The winner will receive a monetary gift card. 2nd-3rd places will also be given special awards.
The Soup Cook Off will be hosted by Amy Lynn of Daytime Tri Cities. A gourmet café with area vendors will offer an array of products to enjoy at a café table or take home. Free cooking classes are scheduled each hour and a vast array of door prizes will be drawn during the event.
The Soup Cook Off is opened to the public. Admission of $5.00 allows 10 tastings, a people’s choice vote and your own embossed cook off spoon. Additional tasting tickets and people’s choice tickets will be available.
