Learn to Chop Like a Professional at Higher Ed’s Knife Skills 101 Fall Class

Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center is opening up the fall culinary series with a special knife skills class on Monday, September 8, 2014 from 6-9 pm. During this class, taught by Chef Jennifer Raichlin, students will learn to become friends with their own kitchen knives as they learn proper skills that can be used efficiently to prepare meals at home. Chef Jennifer is certified as a Raw Culinary Chef and Instructor and is the owner of Healing Meals in Bristol, Tennessee. Her passions have always focused around nature, health, wellness and food as a healing agent. Her business offers healthy foods that let people taste the difference that eating fresh, natural foods offers the palate.

Jennifer will cover many techniques such as positioning and guiding/guarding. She will concentrate on batonnet, julienne, dice, mince and chiffonade. She will also discuss how to properly care for and sharpen knives as well as cover techniques for fancy garnishing. She will finish with demonstrations and discussion of other kitchen gadgets that can be an asset to the home and professional kitchen. The class will enjoy “tasting the fresh foods of their labor” in new and unusual ways.

It is recommended that you bring your own 8”-10” chef knife and a paring knife if you have them. If not, a chef knife will be provided. Class limit is 20. For more information or to register for this class: www.swcenter.edu/cooking or contact Sean Webb at 276 619-4301.
